Essex County was the first county in the United States to have its own parks department. It is called the Essex County Park System.

It is one of the New York Metropolitan airports operated by Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. It is a hub for United Airlines. It is also a leading cargo airport and is a hub for FedEx Express and Kalitta Air.
